Will you share your story?

Adoption England are looking for families who’d be happy to take part in a campaign for National Adoption Week (wc 20th October). Could you get involved? The campaign aims to raise awareness and reshape perceptions of modern adoption, while continuing to inspire potential adopters to take that first step and find out more.

This year’s theme, “A Welcome Home,” highlights that you don’t need a big house or lots of money to provide a stable, welcoming and loving home for a child in need of adoption. Whether that’s a cosy flat, a rented terrace or a place where the dinner table doubles as the homework station – like all parenting, it’s not about ‘perfection’, it’s about being there, learning along the way, and ultimately giving a child a place to call home.

Who they’d love to hear from

They’re looking to speak with a diverse range of families, including those from Black African, Caribbean, mixed heritage, and other ethnic minoritised backgrounds, who can share their adoption experiences to inspire others to consider adoption. For example, they’d love to speak to families who are happy to share anecdotes and stories that show how their adoptive family life might be sometimes messy, chaotic, joyful and real, and ultimately what makes it all worthwhile and so rewarding.

What would you have to do?

There are a number of ways you can support this campaign by sharing your story and Adoption England will talk you through the options and explore what feels right for you. Support could involve:

  • Taking part in interviews with UK media about your adoption story (To note, people willing to share their life stories must therefore be happy to tell their story publicly. The strong preference is for families to be shown in content and in media. They can work around your preferences for which kind of media you’re happy to take part in and use pseudonyms for children’s names if preferable.)
  • Taking part in photography/film that will also be used as part of the campaign, on social media (including on the You Can Adopt social channels and those of the regional/voluntary adoption agencies across England) and in UK press – optional
  • Filming your own videos (user-generated content) using your phone, to also be used as part of the campaign on You Can Adopt social media channels social media – optional

For those of you taking part in photography/filmed content, you will need to be available in early October (date/location TBC), with the campaign launch planned to kickstart National Adoption Week (20th). All travel expenses will of course be covered. For those of you home creating your own UGC, this will need to be filmed in advance – a clear brief will be provided.

Here is an example from last year’s campaign of how your story may be used.

How they work and next steps

Once you get in touch, Freuds will arrange an initial call to share more about the campaign, chat through your story and work out whether it’s right for you before decide if you want to proceed.
